The Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at LifeBridge Health strives to provide the highest quality of comprehensive clinical care throughout all phases of treatment for each of our patients.
By combining technical expertise and wisdom that comes with years of experience, our team at The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology at Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital provide a full range of treatment services: screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
Hematology
Hematology focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood and bone marrow (blood-forming tissue).
Medical Oncology
Medical Oncology focuses on treating cancer with medications that destroy cancer cells. It also provides treatment to the body to help defend itself against further disease.
Different types of treatments are utilized by our team, depending on each patient's individualized treatment.
Some of the treatments include:
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping the cells from dividing. The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated.
Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing.
Immunotherapy (also called biological therapy)
Biological therapy is a form of treatment that uses the body's immune system, either directly or indirectly, to fight cancer or to lessen the side effects that can be caused by some cancer treatments. It uses materials made by the body or made in a laboratory to boost, direct or restore the body's natural defenses against disease.
The program strives to provide state-of-the-art treatments and therapies by continually researching and exploring new and better modalities.
Patients have access to numerous clinical trials, and the department continuously works to improve all aspects of cancer detection and care. The department works closely with the Divisions of Radiation Oncology and Surgical Oncology to provide a multi-disciplinary "team" approach which is essential for quality cancer care. An attentive staff gives special attention to one-on-one interaction with patients, believing this interaction is the most important aspect of clinical care.
Other members of the care team include pathologists, social workers, pharmacists, dietitians, image recovery specialists and financial counselors, integrating their knowledge and expertise to better understand the disease and treat the whole patient and every phase of his or her disease.
Our team offers three different locations to make it more convenient for patients to receive their care: Sinai Hospital, Northwest Hospital, and 21 Crossroads in Owings Mills.
